Getting Started with ProtoPie Connect

ProtoPie Connect is an exclusive extension app as part of the industry solutions. You can easily run prototypes simultaneously across multiple devices, displays, and hardware with ProtoPie Connect being the glue that holds everything together.

Connecting various prototypes to ProtoPie Connect, you would be able to make your dynamic prototyping environment where one prototype can influence the other, and vice-versa. Let's take automotive as an example. Tap on a button on the center display, content would appear dynamically on the cluster and head-up display (HUD). A lot of the real-world interactions go beyond a single person and single device. With ProtoPie Connect, you can prototype any real-world scenarios involving multiple devices, displays, and hardware seamlessly and harmoniously.

Besides, any hardware can be connected via a Bridge app. On ProtoPie's GitHub repository, you can find examples of how you can connect, among others, the Logitech G29 (steering wheel) and Xbox controller (gamepad) to ProtoPie Connect. Also, there are examples of how you can use ProtoPie Connect with the OBD (on-board diagnostics: self-diagnostic and reporting capability for automotive vehicles) and MQTT (standard messaging protocol for IoT). You could basically connect any piece of hardware via a Bridge app. You can alter the code of the Bridge app yourself to make it work for whatever hardware you would like to connect. For now, only Arduino can be connected via USB without a Bridge app.

There are two types of ProtoPie Connect. ProtoPie Connect for Desktop works on macOS and Windows. ProtoPie Connect for Embedded Systems works in the terminal, meaning you could use it on any computer, such as the Raspberry Pi.

Communication among multiple devices for ProtoPie Connect happens via the Send response and Receive trigger, just like you would before without ProtoPie Connect. For a prototype to send out a message, you would use the Send response. For a prototype to receive a message, you would use the Receive trigger.

Runtime Environment

There are two types of ProtoPie Connect.

  • ProtoPie Connect for Desktop
  • ProtoPie Connect for Embedded Systems

ProtoPie Connect for Desktop

  • Operating system:

    • Windows 10 64-bit or above.
  • Storage: 500MB or more.
  • RAM: 1GB or more.

ProtoPie Connect for Embedded Systems

ProtoPie Connect works in the terminal as well, allowing it to be used, among others, on a single-board computer such as the Raspberry Pi. ProtoPie Connect for Embedded Systems is only available offline (isolated environment) as it makes use of a license file-based authentication.
